Codeine Phosphate is a member of the opioid class of medications and is used to manage pain. Codeine Phosphate is also used to treat cough.

Codeine Phosphate belongs to the opioid analgesic group. It is indicated for the management of mild to moderate pain.

Warning and Precautions

Codeine Phosphate sometimes causes lightheadedness, dizziness, or drowsiness. Please avoid operating potentially unsafe tasks or mechanisms such as driving a car, until you know your reaction to the medication. The effect may be worse if you take alcohol or certain medicines such as sleep aids, sedatives, or muscle relaxants. Use Codeine Phosphate with caution.

Important

Codeine Phosphate should not be used while being pregnant unless specifically directed by your doctor. If you are planning to become pregnant, make sure your doctor knows that you are taking Codeine Phosphate. It also passes into breast milk and could cause dangerous, life-threatening side effects in a nursing infant.

Missed Dose

If your doctor gave you strict instructions not to miss a dose and if you have missed one, take the missed dose as soon as you have remembered. If it is time for your next dose, skip it and continue taking your medicine regularly. Do not double the medicine. It may cause severe side effects.

Overdose

Almost any medicine taken in excess doses without consulting your doctor causes an overdose. Symptoms of an overdose may include severe drowsiness, extreme dizziness, pinpoint pupils, slow or labored breathing, bluish skin or lips, cold and clammy skin, limp muscles, slow heartbeat, or unresponsiveness/coma. If you suspect an overdose, contact your emergency room or local poison control center immediately.

Storage

Codeine Phosphate should be stored at room temperature in the container it comes in. Protect your medicine from heat, sunlight, and moisture. Do not store Codeine Phosphate in your bathroom. Keep it securely locked away and out of reach of children and pets.

Side Effects

The following common side effects may bother you: constipation, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, headache, lightheadedness, nausea, sweating, trouble sleeping, vomiting, or stomach cramps. Seek medical attention immediately if any of these severe side effects occur: severe allergic reactions (rash, hives, swelling of the face or throat), chest pain, difficulty breathing or shallow breathing, fainting, irregular or slow heartbeat, severe confusion, or seizures.
